How does it differ from electrical EMS?
The magnetic field induces current in the body; electrical EMS applies current through electrodes. FDA describes magnetic contouring as targeting muscle tone and firmness, with effects that may require ongoing treatment. Read FDA’s magnetic-field section.
What does a study actually show?
A 2023 open-label study of the CoolTone device enrolled 16 adults; 14 completed the protocol. It used eight abdominal treatments over four weeks and reported improvements in plank and curl-up tests compared with baseline. Read the original study.
There was no control group. That limits how confidently the changes can be attributed to treatment. The study measured muscle function and body satisfaction, rather than establishing a universal fat-loss result. Its schedule describes research, rather than the number of visits you need.
Allergan provided the study design, conduct and funding before its acquisition by AbbVie. AbbVie participated in interpreting the data and reviewing and approving the publication. The authors disclosed employment, consulting or other commercial relationships with AbbVie or its companies. See the funding and disclosures. We treat this as limited, commercially connected evidence. It provides no guarantee for the machine or package a provider offers you.
What about machines combining magnetic stimulation and RF?
Magnetic stimulation and RF deliver different forms of energy. RF heats tissue. Evidence for a combined device concerns that combination; it cannot establish the result from magnetic stimulation alone. Ask for the full model name, including the version.
What are the risks and precautions?
Muscle soreness and cramps can occur. Implanted electronic devices and metal in the treatment area need attention in the assessment. Read the device cautions. Obtain the machine’s patient information and ask who handles concerns after a visit.
How should I compare the quote?
Write down magnetic-only or combined RF, device model, treatment area and included visits. If the provider proposes maintenance visits, include their cost when comparing the longer-term total. Separate proposed visits from a guaranteed outcome.
At the consultation, ask it this way
Request the initial cost and any proposed later costs separately. If a study is mentioned, ask whether it used the same model and combination.
If reception does not know the technical details, ask them to pass the question to the person responsible for the service. Arrange a professional assessment for personal risk and suitability questions.
